Description:

An interactive board, based on the Beopardy series of videos from Smosh Pit, with a Pokemon-theme!

Case Study

During my down-time, I like to watch videos from the Smosh channels, and one of my favourite series is the Beopardy (their own version of Jeopardy). The usual host, Shayne Topp, always says to leave our suggestions in the comments. Thus, I decided to take it one step further and instead of suggesting, I thought I'd build a whole game for them!

There were a few goals I wanted to accomplish with this project, aside from being recognized by the Smosh cast and crew. One of them being that some of the Smosh cast really enjoy Pokemon. There was a whole Smoshcast (their podcast) that was dedicated to the topic and Shayne, Damien, and Tommy were excited for it. Thus, I wanted to build a game that was challenging for whoever they decided to be in the video. I didn't want the whole video to be over in 10 minutes, so I wanted to pull some interesting and entertaining questions that would challenge those who had previous Pokemon knowledge.

Another goal I wanted to accomplish was to focus more on newer Pokemon content. I saw in comments of previous Smosh videos that watchers wished there was more discussion and features of newer content, so I tried to tailor my questions to satisfy both newer and older Pokemon content, with a slight focus on newer content. I would say I ended with a ratio of 65:35.

In terms of building this, I used my previous Jeopardy-esque projects as base, ensuring that I was keeping the Beopardy brand consistency. The biggest issue, however, was ensuring it could be viewed on all devices. There was a chance the Smosh crew could see this during their lunch break while on their phones, so I needed to ensure it was functional at all times, and not just when it's needed. It took a lot of adjusting, but eventually, thanks to the less amount of categories in general, I managed to get everything looking great on every size of device!

Ultimately, while this project did get finished and it's something I'm proud of, this project ended up as a failure. I was wanting to publish this to Reddit where the crew frequents the most, but the moderators on there do not communicate well unfortunately. I sent messages to them to sync up a time to post this project, only to be ignored. Even messaging an individual mod ended up the same. There was nothing I could do except realize that I can't force communication and post it to my portfolio. Sometimes, you can do everything correct and still fail.
