Description:

A website made to display spawns in Area Zero, sorted by Pokemon type and location!

Case Study

During my summer break between terms 2 and 3, I wanted to undertake a project to give back to the Pokemon community, and that involved a lot of littler pieces. One them was a site that displays various species of Pokemon in Area Zero. This was spurred when I was watching DooleyNoted (Twitch streamer) shiny hunt for a Pokemon, and then go to Area Zero for the duration of his sandwich.

Now, for context, in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you can create sandwiches that give various benefits, such as increasing the spawn rates of Pokemon, shiny rates, items you receive from raids, etc. This is all determined by Pokemon types, however, so the benefit only applies to that type (ie, Fire, Ghost, etc.)

I thought it would be nifty to have a site that would show which Pokemon would spawn when a sandwich is active and which part of Area Zero they would be in too. So the next day, I went straight to work.

The biggest challenge for me, at the time, was figuring out how I would code it, especially with my limited skillset. While repetitive, I thought the best way to tackle the issue was having the images of the Pokemon live in containers based on their location, and give them classes based on their type. Their initial display would be hidden, but when a type is selected from the select list, it would toggle on their display if they spawn in that location.

After graduating in 2024 I decided to upgrade the page to be more consistent to user experience. While the functions remained mostly the same, I instead opted to use a select list instead of checkboxes to toggle on the spawns. As well, in each table for location, I added a button that would open up a lightbox to show the user where the location can be found.

One day I hope to expand this page with more areas found within Scarlet and Violet, but for now, it's just meant to be a little side tool for all of the shiny hunters out there!
